Do You Need a Denture Reline?

A pair of dentures floating inside a glass jar.Dentures are durable appliances that are designed to replace missing teeth, so they are intended to be long-lasting. However, the time will come in which you need an adjustment to be made to your appliance. This procedure is known as a dental reline, and the procedure will help to refit your dentures after the bone and gums that support them shrink due to your missing teeth.

Replacement or Reline

If your dentures aren't fitting properly anymore, you may be wondering whether you can have them relined or if you need an entire replacement. For the most part, relining your dentures will still be a good idea if your gums are not shrinking too quickly and your appliance is still in decent shape. If your dentures show excessive wear, you should consider a replacement, as too many relines could leave you with a smile that appears gummy with visibly smaller teeth.

Types of Relines

If you and your dentist determine that a reline is appropriate for our teeth, there are two options from which you can choose: soft and hard relines. A hard reline will work to improve the fit of the dentures. On the other hand, if the fit is alright, but the dentures are uncomfortable and causing mouth sores, a soft reline might be used.

Regardless of the type of reline that is used, your dentist will need to take updated impressions of your mouth. This is done to ensure the new denture position correctly reflects the bite position of your jaw. This will also help to ensure the denture stays in place at the midline in order to achieve an attractive and symmetrical smile appearance.

If you are unhappy with the fit or comfort level of your dentures, contact us to set up an appointment to have your appliance inspected.
