Why Do You Need a Temporary Crown?

A diagram of how a dental crown works! If your tooth needs a dental crown, you might need to make a couple of trips to your dental office before the procedure is complete. In some cases, you may need to wear a temporary crown until your final restoration can be created in a dental lab.

In your first appointment, the tooth in question will be reshaped, and in some cases, it will need to be protected so that infection cannot set in while you are waiting for your final restoration. A temporary crown can serve this role, and it can be put into place and easily removed just a few weeks later.

Benefits of Using a Temporary Crown

In some cases, the use of a temporary crown will be optional, and there are several benefits to using one:

•  An attractive smile. If you are missing part of a tooth, you may be embarrassed to smile. A temporary crown can leave you with an attractive and normal appearing smile until you can get back into the dentist to have your procedure completed.
•  Maintain proper spacing. If there is no crown in place, the surrounding teeth could begin to move and shift into the empty space. A temporary crown will hold the space open until your final restoration is ready to be put in.
•  Improved comfort. If your tooth is broken or chipped, it can be quite uncomfortable. A crown can improve your comfort level, especially if the pulp or dentin is exposed.
•  Prevent further damage. By covering up your damaged tooth, you'll be preventing further damage and potentially the need for additional dental work, such as a root canal.
