What is Dental Conditioning

Dental Conditioning Frank W. Sallustio DDS, MS, FACP AZ 85375-4486Dental conditioning is a way of helping your gums heal so that your dentures fit and function more comfortably. You may have this procedure done when you get your first set of dentures or you can also get it done if you have a pair of dentures that have become painful or bothersome.

Who Needs Dental Conditioning

There are several different occasions when you may need dental conditioning. One that we've already mentioned is when you're suffering from denture pain that isn't getting better because your dentures fit poorly.

This is important because if left unchecked, it can lead to accelerated bone loss. You may also need it when you're healing from tooth extractions. Essentially, it'll help when your gums are red, inflamed and irritated. Dental conditioning makes your dentures fit and function better.

How Dental Conditioning Works

Dental conditioning softens your gums' surface, so you have less pressure and soreness while wearing your dentures. This is done by placing a lining inside your dentures that will give your gums a rest, so they can heal. By doing so you'll also have your blood supply restored and slow any blood loss that's occurring.

Although your dentures weren't working correctly, now they are once again. However, it's still a good idea to transition to new dentures eventually - these ones will simply help you ""survive"" until you can do so.

Many people are pleasantly surprised when their dentures fit well once again. Sometimes this doesn't work, and you'll need a temporary set of dentures instead. These aren't as good though, since they're so soft and flexible they won't be fully functional for chewing.

This is why dental conditioning is always the first step. Now that you have more knowledge about what dental conditioning is, you should feel more comfortable if you need it. When that time arises we're here for you. Just make an appointment with our office to get your dental conditioning done today.
