Studies Show Missing Teeth Cause Nutritional Deficiencies

Posted on 1/20/2016 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
A man missing a tooth!A majority of people who experience loss of the permanent teeth have a decrease in quality life, often due to difficulty chewing and the embarrassment associated with tooth loss. Depression and frustration result when they cannot enjoy the foods they previously loved, and when dietary changes result, some people might suffer from nutritional deficiencies.

Unfortunately, when we don't get the proper nutrition, we can suffer from a variety of devastating health issues, so it is crucial that dental work is sought to correct these problems.

Research has been completed by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, and findings suggest that people who have lost their teeth tend to have poorer diets. One study in particular indicates that tooth loss results in impaired chewing, which in turn causes people to eat foods that are softer.

These food items tend to have less fiber and a lower density of nutrients. Unfortunately, the NIDCR also indicates that traditional dentures might not always do enough to improve chewing, so even with these restorations in place, you might not get the necessary nutrients.

Tooth loss also makes it difficult to eat fruits and vegetables, which tend to be the foods highest in nutrients and fiber content. The tough textures of these food items can make chewing difficult or even impossible. When people are forced to limit their food choices based on their chewing ability they may make poor choices, selecting food items that don't do anything for their overall health.

You don't need to suffer any longer without teeth. You can regain your ability to chew and eat what you want with dental restorations that fit properly. Dental implants, dentures, bridges, and crowns can all replace your missing teeth, and your dentist can help you to choose the restorations that are right for your unique dental health needs.
