What Can I Do about My Peg Lateral Incisors?

Posted on 1/30/2016 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
A before and after image of a patients teeth suffering from peg lateral incisor. Are you unhappy with your smile because of the presence of peg lateral incisors? This issue typically affects the upper lateral incisors, and it causes the teeth to be abnormally small or possibly pointy when compared to the rest of the teeth. Peg laterals can occur on both sides of the mouth or on one side only.

When they don't grow to full size, the appearance will be affected, especially since these teeth tend to be in an extremely noticeable location of the smile. Since they are front and center in your mouth and are quite distinctive, the condition can be embarrassing, and many people seek out treatment to correct their smiles.

Causes of Peg Lateral Incisors

There are two primary causes of peg lateral incisors:

•  Genetics. Peg laterals seem to be hereditary in nature. Many people with peg laterals have a parent who has the same condition.
•  Developmental issues. In some cases, the teeth simply fail to develop properly, resulting in peg lateral incisors.

Both of these causes will be out of your control, but you can certainly have a say in which treatment option you would like to use to correct them.

Treatment Options for Peg Laterals

If you are ready to finally improve the appearance of your peg laterals, there are several treatment options from which you can choose:

•  Porcelain veneers. These thin plastic shells will cover the front of your teeth to make them appear to better fit with your smile.
•  Dental bonding. This tooth-colored resin can be shaped in order to improve the appearance of your tooth.
•  Orthodontics. Braces could be used to position the teeth ideally before either of the two previous options are used.

Our office will be happy to discuss your treatment options with you. Contact us today to set up your consultation.
