While they can be made from a variety of materials, ceramic is typically the most popular, because it blends in perfectly with the rest of your mouth. Gold is another popular choice, but is often passed over because of its visibility. However, would it be the best choice for your mouth?
Back of the Mouth
Gold crowns are often the superior choice for teeth at the very back of your mouth. In this area, your teeth are subjected to the hardest biting forces.
While ceramic crowns can withstand normal biting and chewing forces (which makes them an excellent choice for molars that are closer to the front of your mouth), they are liable to chip if exposed to too much pressure. Gold is exceptionally strong, and won't chip, even under the strongest forces.
And, even though these crowns are strong, they are still more friendly toward the teeth they meet up with, meaning they won't cause excessive wear on opposite teeth. As an added bonus, because these crowns are at the very back of your mouth, you don't have to worry about them being visible when you smile.
Teeth Grinding
Grinding puts unnecessary pressure on your teeth, and causes them to wear down unnaturally. It also frequently occurs at night, when you have no control over it. Crowns are often used to fix the damage done by grinding. However, if you don't have grinding addressed, it can be detrimental to your new restoration if it is made out of ceramic, causing chips and fractures. Gold may be your best option in the case of grinding, as the material won't suffer from damage.
Ultimately, the type of crown used for your mouth will be the choice of you and your dentist. During your consultation, you will discuss your options and specific needs and find the solution that will provide you with the best possible results.
