What to Know About a New Mouth Guard

Posted on 8/25/2017 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
Mouth Guard Frank W. Sallustio DDS, MS, FACP AZ 85375-4486
When you get a new mouth guard, there are a few things you should expect and know about taking care of it. If you got it from your dentist or prosthodontist, it should be customized to fit into your mouth. This should leave you with a suctioned feeling when you wear it, which is good.

It needs to be removed when not needed, and cleaned prior to each use. If you don't care for it properly, it could leave you struggling with poor oral hygiene because of the bacteria that is repeatedly being placed in your mouth.

Caring for Your New Mouth Guard

Some mouth guards should be soaked in mouthwash to help remove any microbes of bacteria between uses, on top of being brushed out and rinsed when you aren't wearing it. This is something you should find out when you are getting your mouth guard placed.

You should only wear your mouth guard when instructed. Some mouth guards are supposed to be used during heavy activities, such as sports, while others are supposed to be worn during sleep. Do whatever your dentist or prosthodontist tells you in terms of making sure it is worn properly. If you wear it too much, it could potentially harm your bite.

If you want to know what to expect while adjusting to your new mouth guard, ask when you get it placed. That way, the instructions are fresh in your mind when you go home. If you ever forget your instructions, call the office again. They will be happy to walk you through the steps again. If you ever notice that your mouth guard is not fitting properly, or leaving your mouth sore, call them again and schedule an appointment. It may need to be adjusted to give you the perfect fit.
