How to Best Care for a Dental Crown

Getting a dental crown represents a significant investment of time and money on your part. To this end, once you have one, you probably want to do whatever you can to take care of it.

A properly cared for crown should last you for decades to come. Here are some things to consider if you are looking for ways to take care of your new crown.

Avoid Sticky or Extremely Crunchy Foods

First, keep in mind that a crown is essentially a "cap" that has been placed over a tooth. Although we use the very best in dental technique, a crown is not actually a part of the tooth. To this end, remember that it is possible for a crown to come off. Although it is rare, such an occurrence is not completely unheard of.

In order to minimize the chances of losing a crown, you may wish to steer clear of foods that would put a lot of pressure or tension on the crown. Foods that are extremely hard and crunchy may end up placing too much pressure on the crown.

Likewise, foods that are extremely sticky-such as saltwater taffy-could end up pulling too hard on a crown and cause it to come loose from the tooth to which it is attached.

Dental Hygiene Practices

In terms of keeping the crown clean, you should brush and floss just like you would with your natural teeth. This means that you should brush after every meal, and floss at least once a day. Doing this will help to ensure that the crown lasts many years, and does not become a repository for bacteria to gather.
