What is Denture Stomatitis?

Posted on 11/25/2018 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
What is Denture Stomatitis? When you have to get dentures, you hope that this will resolve the oral health issues you have. While dentures do solve many oral health issues, they also open you up to other problems that you will have to deal with. Denture stomatitis is something to learn about. It affects one-third to one-half of all the people who wear full dentures. Knowing what it is and what to do about it is something all denture wears need.

The Basics of Denture Stomatitis

The best way to describe denture stomatitis is a sore mouth. That is a very simplified description of what is happening to someone who wears dentures. It is usually limited to the area beneath the upper denture. The symptoms of denture stomatitis are typically mild, and many people are asymptomatic.

Some of the signs of a problem include:

•  Bad breath or halitosis
•  Slight burning or swelling in the area
•  Small amounts of bleeding in the affected area

There are many different reasons that people can suffer from denture stomatitis. Some of the factors include:

•  Age
•  Nutritional deficiencies
•  Suppressed immune system
•  Antibiotics
•  Excess saliva
•  Tobacco Use
•  Poor oral hygiene

One other common cause is wearing the dentures for too long or through the night. While it is possible to avoid some of the factors, there are some things that are beyond the control of the denture wearer.

Treating Denture Stomatitis

There are many things that a person can do to avoid the problem. They can avoid the factors such as smoking, or they can make sure they follow good oral hygiene habits. They can remove their dentures and soak them overnight as they sleep.

These things can prevent it from happening and can help resolve the issues that occur if it happens. There are also topical treatments available. The key is knowing that there is a problem with denture stomatitis and to act upon that knowledge.
