The Dangers of Exercising Right After Dental Implant Surgery

Posted on 7/20/2019 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
The Dangers of Exercising Right After Dental Implant SurgeryThere are a number of things you need to avoid doing right after dental implant surgery. You shouldn't eat abrasive foods that could hurt your gums. You shouldn't drink alcohol, soda, or any acidic drinks. You also shouldn't exercise. This last one may seem odd—what does exercising have to do with recovering from having implants installed?

Your Body Needs to Rest

While it's true that being in good shape will help your body recover from surgery faster, it's also true that it's perfectly fine to take a few days off. Your body needs time to rest and recover from having your implants installed.

If you get back to exercising right away, you're going to put a strain on your body's resources. It will want to devote those resources to healing, but by exercising, you're demanding those resources go elsewhere. In the end, it will actually take you longer to heal if you get back to exercising right away.

You Could Injure Yourself

You could also accidentally hurt yourself while exercising. If you tend to clench your jaw while working out, for example, you could damage the sensitive area around your implants. Once your blood is pumping, there are other potential issues. For example, this increased circulation could actually cause any pain you have from the surgery to get worse. It can also actually increase the chance that your body will reject your implants.

Give it a Few Days
We recommend that you want at least three days before you get back to exercising. In most cases, you're probably not going to feel like doing much, anyway, for at least the first day after your procedure. If you do insist on exercising, keep it simple. Some basic stretches or yoga poses and walking is fine. Just don't go straight into running or lifting heavy weights.
