Why Dentures Need the Occasional Readjustment

Posted on 9/20/2019 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
Why Dentures Need the Occasional ReadjustmentWhen you first got your dentures, you undoubtedly noticed a tremendous change in your quality of life. For one thing, you were finally able to enjoy those foods that you may have had to give up.

For another, you surely noticed a boost in your appearance, as the dentures provided much needed support to your facial structure. Finally, you likely found that it was easy to speak properly again. However, as time passes, you might begin to notice a decline in the performance of your dentures. This is not due to anything you have done; the fact of the matter is that dentures occasionally need to be adjusted.

Adjusting Your Dentures

The most common way that dentures are adjusted involves replacing the soft lining. The lining is the pliable structure that fits up against your gum tissue, holding the dentures in place. As time passes, this lining may begin to wear out. Sometimes it compresses, other times it may develop cracks or tears. In either case, the solution is to have the dentures adjusted.

Other reasons that you may need to have your dentures adjusted include changes in your gum tissue. If your tissue changes shape, then it will no longer fit up against the lining of the dentures. The solution is to adjust the lining to fit the new shape of your gum tissue.

Sometimes the lining of the dentures is just fine, and your gum tissue has retained its shape, but you still find yourself needing to have your dentures adjusted. This could be because the dentures themselves are starting to wear out. Just like anything else, dentures do wear down over time, and having them adjusted is a great way to restore their functionality and prolong their useful life.

Regardless of the reason, sometimes you will have to adjust your dentures. The good news is that this won't take long, and you'll be able to resume using them in short order.
