![]() You may have heard that having a root canal may ruin your tooth, but it's actually quite the opposite. Root canals exist to save a tooth from potential loss. Moreover, root canals are sometimes necessary to stop infection from spreading to other parts of your mouth. Why a Root Canal Was Suggested to YouPart of why you may have been suggested a root canal is because of the potential chance of serious gum disease. Most of the time, root canals are suggested to people who have suffered from extreme tooth decay. After the tooth decays, the inner part of the tooth is exposed to the bacteria inside of your mouth, and that bacteria infects the tissue underneath the tooth. If left uncorrected, that tissue becomes filled with puss and the bacteria continues to eat away at your tooth. If the root canal is not performed, the tooth will eventually suffer severe damage, and it will need to be fully removed. Having a root canal clears the tooth of the infected pulp beneath the tooth so there is no risk of recurring infection. After a root canal is completed, the tooth will be fitted with a crown. The crown serves two purposes. The first is so that you can eat normally again. The second is so that the tooth is protected from bacteria and so that you can clean your teeth properly to prevent further decay. Please let us know if you have any more questions about root canals.
