It is common for people to get dental bonding confused with dental cement or dental fillings. It's understandable because all three are made out of similar material and there is some overlap of uses. Dental bonding is normally used for reshaping a tooth while dental cement is used to attach other materials to a tooth and dental fillings are used to fill in the decayed parts of the tooth. Dental cement may also be called adhesive bonding.
Dental bonding is usually used for cosmetic purposes, but can also be used when a tooth has sustained a particular type of damage. Dental bonding is great for repairing teeth because it is hard like your teeth and easy to work with. It also bonds to your teeth very strongly giving it durability so it can last for a very long time with the proper care.
How Dental Bonding Is Applied to Teeth
Dental bonding comes in two types: direct composite and adhesive. Direct composite is usually used for repairing teeth that have suffered chips or cracks whereas the adhesive variety is used for adhering crowns and bridges to the teeth. Direct composite is applied directly to the teeth and shaped using special tools to repair the tooth. Because direct composite is so malleable yet strong, it is a great option for reshaping teeth to achieve a certain look as well. Once the desired shape is achieved, an ultraviolet light cures the bonding, making it strong and long lasting. On the other hand, adhesive is applied to the tooth but not shaped. Its purpose it to create a strong bond between the tooth and another material. Once the adhesive is placed on the tooth, the other material is placed on top.
