How Dental Bridges Work with Some Natural Teeth in Place
Posted on 4/20/2020 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
Missing a tooth can be annoying or even debilitating for many reasons. Missing teeth expose the gum to food that they normally wouldn't be exposed to. If the food is hard, it can cause real damage to the gum and may even open up the gum causing bleeding. What's worse about missing a tooth is that it can actually cause your bite to change over time leading to jaw problems. Once a tooth is gone, the surrounding teeth will try to close in the gap potentially giving you an uneven bite.
Luckily, a dental bridge may a good solution if you're missing a single tooth. Dental bridges are devices that fill in the gap between two natural teeth with a false tooth. They may be a good solution for many people who are worried about the dangers of a missing tooth.
Dental Bridge Installation
Dental bridge installation is quite simple. There are three main types of bridges and each are used in certain circumstances. The most common and widely used bridge is a traditional bridge. Traditional bridges attach to the teeth surrounding the gap by the use of a crown. It may also be possible to install a dental implant if the gap is too large or multiple teeth are missing. The second type of bridge is called a cantilever bridge. This type of bridge is rarely used and is generally implemented when there are no teeth on one side of the gap. Finally, there is the Maryland bonded bridge. This type of bridge is bonded to the teeth with a strong resin and does not require crowns.
