When you are a denture wearer, just like with your natural teeth, they need special care and there are certain rules that every denture wearer should follow to keep their dentures and their mouth in general in good oral health.
Good Rules of Thumb for Denture Care
Your mouth needs a break from your dentures, so you need to take them out of your mouth before you go to sleep. This helps the tissues in your mouth rest from having the dentures in on top of your gums all day long. When you take your dentures out, put them in a warm water solution or denture cleanser. The soaking helps to remove the tartar, bacteria, stains and plaque.
Handle your dentures with care, as they will break easily. Always keep a folded towel handy to clean them over just in case you might drop them and be sure to put them out of the reach of small children and pets. Do not use hard brushes, but a soft bristled toothbrush.
Dentures need to be cleaned daily. Just because they are not real does not mean they have different requirements. They still need to be cleaned because they will still build up stains and tartar, just as your natural teeth would. If this happens it will cause tissue problems, irritation, or even infection. Brush them with a soft bristled toothbrush with regular hand soap or mild detergent, or one of the many products that are available at the drugstore or supermarket, as long as they are ADA approved.
Just because you have dentures, it still means you also need to pay special attention to your gums as well. When your dentures come out be sure that you take the time to rinse your mouth good and then gently with a soft brush or washcloth massage them and rinse thoroughly. Be sure if you are only wearing partial dentures that you still brush and floss your natural teeth just as you always would- care of both is essential.
Regular visits to our office are vital to check for changes or sores. Also, be careful to pay attention to how your dentures feel in your mouth. Do they fit and feel right? If not, be sure to speak with us about this issue as well.
