How to Make Sure Your Mouth Remains Healthy When You Wear Dentures
Posted on 7/23/2020 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
If you have lost some teeth you might wear dentures. Available in full or partial sets, dentures serve as a replacement for teeth. They improve your smile, boost confidence, and allow you to enjoy your food. Even if you wear dentures, especially if you wear dentures, you still need to maintain good oral hygiene. Remember your gums need as much care as your teeth and dentures can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
Keep Your Mouth Happy
Healthy and happy really do go hand in hand. Oral health plays a huge role in total body health, regardless of how many teeth a person has. If you have dentures, you still need to brush twice a day. This sweeps away food and other debris plus it removes plaque. Yes, you still must consider plaque if you have dentures. Use a soft bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste when you brush as dentures can get scratched.
When brushing, pay attention to your gums, checks, roof of your mouth, and your tongue. You want to clean all areas where plaque can build up plus massage your gums and knock out bad breath. When it's time to take your dentures out, be sure to keep them in water so they won't warp.
Special Care for Partials
If you wear partial dentures it is even more important to take very good care of your mouth. Brushing will help to stop gum disease and/or tooth decay, so you can preserve your existing teeth. Keep in mind the plaque and bacteria that can build up between your teeth and dentures so good oral hygiene is a must. Brushing also helps to prevent discoloration and maintain a natural appearance if you have dentures. If you need any help maintaining oral care with your dentures call us today.
