Getting new dentures can be exciting, especially if you have had a series of dental problems. However, you still have to take things slowly at first. The following information reviews what many new denture wearers do that should be avoided.
Eating the Wrong Foods
In their excitement to try different foods, new denture wearers do not consider the health of their gums. For example, eating a steak can cause healing gums to become quite sore from the added pressure. Instead, it is important to transition slowly into wearing your new dentures, as they do place added pressure on the gums. Wait for your gums to heal and eat softer foods and thin cuts of meat. That way, you won't experience any problems with fit or with food getting stuck between the denture and the gum line.
Wearing the Dentures Too Often
To make sure your dentures continue to fit, you should soak them in a denture cleansing solution at night while you sleep and give your gums a rest. Some new denture wearers wear their new prostheses as much as 16 hours per day. However, this is a mistake, as it can cause your gums to develop blisters and swell. When you first get your dentures, take them out at night to soak, as wearing them too much can cause the denture material to dry out, which can cause problems with fit as well. It is for this reason that many new denture wearers ask us to reline their dentures soon after they get them.
