Getting Partial Dentures May Be Better for Your Mouth

Partial dentures are a good option for people who have a few missing teeth in the same area, but still have plenty of healthy natural teeth remaining. Read on to learn more about partial dentures and their advantages.
What Are Partial Dentures?
Like complete dentures, partial dentures are rows of prosthetic teeth attached to a gum-colored acrylic base. They are removable and are held in your mouth primarily through suction. However, unlike complete dentures, partial dentures are used to replace only a few teeth in one area as opposed to a full arch or both arches of teeth. Another difference is that removable partial dentures often have metal clasps or natural-looking “precision attachments” that attach to your healthy remaining teeth, keeping the partial denture securely in place.
Advantages of Partial Dentures
One of the biggest advantages of partial dentures is that they prevent your remaining teeth from shifting around in your mouth. When you do not replace missing teeth, your other teeth can shift over time, contributing to bite issues, wear and tear on your teeth, jawbone deterioration, and future tooth loss. Gaps in your smile from missing teeth are also vulnerable to tooth decay, as these spaces attract food particles and bacteria, and allow plaque to build up. Partial dentures protect your mouth from these problems by filling in the gap in your smile.
Partial dentures are also a great choice for patients who do not want to have surgery, or who are not healthy enough for dental implant surgery. You can be fitted for partial dentures in significantly less time than it takes to have implants placed and to then heal from the procedure. Plus, dentures are far less expensive than implants, crowns, and bridges, and they are easy to adjust if you find them uncomfortable or have fit issues.
