Can I Replace a Single Tooth? What is the Process?
Posted on 2/8/2021 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
When patients lose a tooth whether from neglect, trauma or disease they likely consider all the options about treatment. If it is a tooth visible in the front, particularly when they smile, they more than likely will want some type of an artificial tooth. Patients will be happy to learn that there are artificial tooth solutions for a single tooth or for a series of teeth. This article will detail the different options available.
Dental Bridges or Partial Dentures
One of the options available is a partial denture or a bridge. They are relatively inexpensive and look natural when placed among the other natural teeth. A partial denture can be used for a series of teeth or a single tooth just as a bridge can. With a bridge, they are used to 'bridge the gap' between teeth where a tooth has been lost or extracted. The bridge can be secured to the teeth adjacent to the vacated space and held in place without the need for adhesive.
Dental Implants
While most people think of dental implants a solution for a group of teeth, they can also be used for a single tooth. The technique is the same as are the components of the implant. The first of the components is known as the implant which is embedded into the actual upper or lower jawbone of the patient. This provides the anchor for the other two sections. The second part is known as the abutment which is screwed into the implant and provides a foundation for the third and final section known as the crown. The final piece is the only section visible above the patient's gum line. The crown can be shaped to mimic the look of the other teeth. It can also be tinted to match the color of the other teeth as well.
