When patients suffer from extensive tooth loss, the choices for artificial tooth solutions are varied both in cost and style. Some are minimally invasive and less costly, while others are invasive and quite costly. With a large number of options, it can sometimes be difficult to find the style which matches the patient's needs both in end result and in cost.
One of the most widely chosen solutions are dentures. This is because they are considered conservative and minimally invasive. The cost is also a big benefit as they are one of the least expensive options around. Part of the reason they are so reasonably priced is that traditional dentures are inexpensive to manufacture and can be placed on the existing tissue structure of the mouth. There are no additional procedures necessary.
Another positive aspect is that as patients age their mouth changes and shifts. With dentures, they can be reshaped for a comfortable fit. With other solutions, this is not possible. With traditional dentures, they can be removed at any time for proper brushing of the gums and to allow for thorough cleaning of the denture.
Implant Supported Dentures?
For those patients worried about the possibility of dentures slipping out of place or the adhesive failing, there is another option. This option is known as implant-supported dentures. Dental implants are placed first which involves embedding them into the jawbone. Once those are in place either a full or a partial denture can be secured to them making them more secure than traditional dentures.
Another option to make dentures more secure is what is called an overdenture. This can only be done if there are healthy teeth on either side of the vacated space. Dentures are then secured to the healthy teeth rather than implants, but the result is the same. Dentures are secured in place by more than just adhesive.
