Methods to Hold Your Dentures Still While Eating and Speaking
Posted on 5/24/2021 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
After getting your dentures, whether partial or full, you might experience speech and eating difficulty. This is because you have not yet mastered how to hold your dentures with your cheek muscles, and they will tend to move around your mouth as you speak or chew food. Denture movement around your mouth will also make it difficult for you to pronounce some words, which may embarrass you, especially in public places. To hold your dentures while eating and speaking, you can use denture adhesives, speak and eat slowly, and keep your dentures moist.
Use of Denture Adhesives
Newly placed dentures will usually move around your mouth and can cause you to worry that they might fall out. Using denture adhesives to keep your dentures in place will give you comfort when you eat or speak. Adhesives come in different forms, including creams, liquids, and powders. They mix with saliva and puff up, creating a strong link between your gums and dentures. However, their effectiveness will depend on the condition of your dentures.
Keep Your Dentures Moist
Daily maintenance of your dentures is vital to keeping them in good condition. You should clean your dentures with a specialized toothbrush and cleaning agents to increase their longevity. Soaking your dentures in lukewarm or cold water overnight is also ideal for maintaining them in good shape.
Speak and Eat Slowly
Since dentures can affect your chewing and speaking capabilities, you will need to minimize talking when you get your new dentures, as you slowly adjust to prevent them from falling out. You will also need to make dietary changes by eating soft foods. This way, you will also protect your dentures from breakage caused by hard foods.
In addition to holding your dentures in place, the above measures will also prevent injuries in your soft tissues caused by loosely fitting dentures. For more details on how to hold your dentures still while eating and speaking, contact our office today.
