Ways of Preventing Denture Sores

Posted on 9/6/2021 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
Ways of Preventing Denture SoresDentures have over the years grown to become a popular solution to tooth loss. It takes time to get used to the feeling of a foreign object inside your mouth. Dentures may occasionally cause irritation, which, in turn, causes sores that bring a great deal of discomfort. Here are ways of preventing denture sores.

Regularly Refit Your Dentures

Regular visits to our offices will ensure that your dentures get adjusted regularly to prevent them from getting loose inside your mouth. Loose-fitting dentures are known to cause sores due to the friction between them and your gums. Tight-fitting dentures won't have room to move about; therefore, preventing sores.

Regularly Refit Your Dentures

Regularly cleaning your dentures will ensure they do not create a convenient environment for bacteria within the small spaces in them. Bacteria normally collects and finds its way to your gums and roots. These then cause yeast infections, which manifest as sores in your mouth.

Take Care of Your Gums

Before you get used to the feeling of dentures in your mouth, it is important to take it slow. You should put them on for a few hours, as opposed to wearing them all day. Taking them on and off frequently can also lead to sores forming due to the friction that comes with their movement. It is also important not to put them on for too long as it gives way to bacteria collection.

Use New Products Cautiously

Dentures need accompanying products for their care. Products such as denture toothpaste, denture cleaning liquid, and denture adhesives are the most common ones. However, some of these products might cause allergic reactions, which lead to sores. Therefore, before you use a new product, it is important to first pass by our offices for a simple consultation. Our professionals will be able to advise you on the best products for your needs. Well-kept dentures will keep you out of trouble with mouth sores.
