What Leads to Chipped Veneers in Most Cases?

Posted on 9/21/2021 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
What Leads to Chipped Veneers in Most Cases? Veneers are dental appliances that are placed over a tooth to protect its surface from damage and improve your smile. Veneers are typically durable and long-lasting dental restorations. However, just like your teeth, veneers can sometimes break or chip. Read on for reasons why veneers chip.

Biting Hard Foods

When you bite down on hard foods, you are more likely to cause chipping on your veneers. Hard foods like ice will exert high pressure on the veneers and cause breakages. Furthermore, chewing on such food will distort the positioning of veneers; hence, increasing the chances of breakages. Therefore, it is a good idea to refrain from eating hard foods. If you have to eat them, cook them until they are soft enough for easy chewing.

Grinding and Clenching

Another common cause of chipped veneers is teeth grinding and clenching. Commonly known as bruxism, grinding exerts too much pressure on your teeth, causing breakages. There are different types of bruxism: awake bruxism and sleep bruxism. Sleep bruxism is the most common one, and it happens when one is asleep. If you have veneers, continued bruxism can easily cause chipping. To prevent such cases, it is recommended that you use a mouthguard when sleeping. This will reduce the impact exerted on veneers; hence, protecting them.

Fall Accidents

You can also break or chip your veneers through accidents. The impact exerted on your mouth during accidents is strong enough to distort your veneers. As much as it is important to prevent accidents, you can help control the damage. For example, when engaging in physical sporting activities like football or baseball, you should protect your mouth by wearing a mouthguard. This will help reduce the impact in case of an accident. Visit our offices for more information on the causes of veneer chipping.
