When adapting to your new dentures, it is normal to experience some discomfort. Dentures can cause sores and sensitive gums due to slippage or other reasons. As much as this discomfort is almost inevitable, there are ways you can manage it. Here are some of the ways you can manage the discomfort of denture sores.
Remove Dentures at Night
By removing dentures overnight, you give your gums a chance to relax and breathe. Wearing dentures consistently can worsen existing sores. You need to give ample time to the affected areas to heal gently by removing dentures overnight. You can also use that time to soak them and get rid of any debris.
Clean Dentures Daily
Taking care of your dentures will go a long way in improving your oral health. You need to understand that the presence of bacteria on dentures can cause oral infections due to open sores. This is why you should regularly clean your dentures to eliminate any bacteria. You can do so by brushing them at least twice a day. Avoid using toothpaste when brushing dentures because it can be too abrasive and cause damage. You should also floss them at least once daily for the best results.
Avoid Sticky Food
Once you are used to wearing dentures, you can eat anything with them. However, with denture sores, you should avoid certain foods for easier management. Sticky foods can worsen soreness and cause irritation. This is why you should be very careful with the foods you eat. Sticky foods will also remain on your dentures and feed bacteria; this increases the chances of tooth decay and sensitivity. Instead of using such foods, go for soft ones that will be gentle to your dentures. Stick to soft foods until you are used to wearing dentures. To manage any dental discomfort, visit our offices.
