To Get Cosmetic Dental Treatment, You Need Good Oral Health

Posted on 1/24/2022 by Dr. Frank Sallustio
To Get Cosmetic Dental Treatment, You Need Good Oral HealthYou don't have to settle if you aren't happy with your smile. There are several options of cosmetic dental procedures to choose from. There is nothing holding you back from achieving the smile of your dreams. However, its essential that your oral health is good before you can start cosmetic dental treatments.

Dental Issues Need Treated First

When you go to a cosmetic dental consultation, the prosthodontist will inspect your smile and evaluate your oral health. If you have dental issues existing in your mouth, they can be worsened or hidden by some cosmetic dental treatments. So, therefore dental issues need treated beforehand. Even though your dentist wants you to be pleased with your smile, your oral health takes priority when treating your mouth.

Dental Problems That Need Treated First

Several things can get in the way of cosmetic procedures, however there are two specifically that need treated beforehand. Both can typically be resolved in a few weeks to a few months so that is good news. After they are treated, you can get back on the track of enhancing your smile.

Decay-The reason why most cosmetic treatments are put off for an amount of time of because of cavities that need to be addressed first. If the teeth are damaged, specific procedures can be completed safely. This is true for porcelain veneers. They can cover up decay and make it more of a challenge to detect and patients might not even notice any decay until it becomes so serious that it causes pain and discomfort. Teeth whitening while there are existing cavities allows the whitening agent to have a path to the nerves located on the inner tooth layers, resulting in serious issues and significant pain.

Gum Disease-Over 50% of Americans 30 years of age or older are dealing with periodontal disease. When periodontal disease progresses over time, gum recession, tooth loss, halitosis, loose teeth, and bone deterioration can occur. The infection can even spread to other parts of your body and become life threatening. With an infection present, cosmetic work isn't a option available.
