Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Sun City West, AZ
Dental implants have quickly become the top choice for replacing missing teeth. This incredible treatment involves surgically implanting small titanium posts into your jawbone. Your bone, then fuses to the posts, integrating them into your jaw. Over time, the posts are stabilized and are then used to provide secure support for the ceramic crowns that replace your missing teeth. While a revolutionary treatment, an initial consultation is necessary first. At Frank W. Sallustio DDS, MS, FACP, we can determine if you are an ideal candidate for dental implants.
Have You Lost Teeth?
Tooth loss can happen for many reasons. The most common reason is gum disease. You may lose teeth as a result of a facial injury, such as a fall or a sports injury. No matter how you lose your teeth, it is important to have them replaced. Dental implants can help. This unique treatment is quite versatile. No matter if you have lost just one tooth or you are missing a whole arch, there is an option for you. If you have not yet lost teeth, but you require extractions, dental implants may also be discussed as an option for replacement.
Are You Healthy?
Dental implants require surgery to place the titanium posts in your jaw. To undergo a surgical procedure, you need to be in good health. If you have active gum disease, this will first need to be treated before your implants can be placed. If you have any chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, it is important that those conditions be well managed. Performing surgery when conditions are not under control can significantly increase your risk of experiencing complications. Even if you are in good health when you are scheduled for surgery, it is important to call the office if you develop a fever or symptoms of illness. You may need to be rescheduled for when you are feeling better.
Do You Drink or Use Tobacco Products?
Tobacco and alcohol use does not automatically disqualify you from the ability to receive dental implants. However, these habits can affect your ability to heal. Tobacco products restrict the amount of oxygen in your blood and also slow your blood flow. Slower blood flow means that nutrients take longer to reach healing tissues, greatly increasing your risk of developing infections and experiencing implant failure. Excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with the ability of your blood to coagulate.
It is highly recommended that you quit these habits before undergoing implant surgery. If you cannot quit for good, we highly recommend that you at least quit just before your procedure all the way through your recovery. This will decrease your risk for complications, thereby increasing your likelihood of implant success.
What Does Your Jawbone Look Like?
Dental implant posts rely on the fusion of your jawbone to stabilize them. This requires sufficient bone mass in your jaw. However, after you lose teeth, the bone loses stimulation, which results in bone loss. If you lose too much bone mass, there is not enough bone to fuse properly with the posts. This can result in improper integration, causing loose implants, or complete implant failure.
You are Never Too Old
Many older tooth loss patients think that they are too old to get dental implants, and are therefore stuck with dentures. You are never too old to enjoy the benefits of dental implants, so long as you meet other requirements. Whether you are in your 30’s, your 70’s, or older, you can experience all that dental implants have to offer.
